Adopt a School Program

The National Institute of Science announces a funding opportunity for undergraduate members of the NIS clubs and BKX societies to design and implement projects that help local area school students increase their interest in science through targeted educational strategies. The applicants may target elementary, middle, junior high and high for their proposal. The awards will fund projects conducted between April 1, 2010 and March 30, 2011. Grant awards are generally between $1000 and $1500 to purchase supplies to assist the group in helping high school or middle school students with science fair projects and other science school activities. 3-5 grants will be awarded. The awardees will be honored at the annual NIS/BKX meeting. The application deadline is Dec 31st, 2009.

Instructions - How to apply:
The application must be arranged in the following order

  1. Proposal Cover Page indicating the title of the proposal, name of the Investigators, title, University, mailing address, phone, fax and email.
  2. Signed Assurances Pages - Signed commitment letters from the Club/Society advisor and contact person at the participating school.
  3. Statement of Need (500 words max) - Provide a clear statement of need to address your chosen topic and skill areas and how your project will answer those needs. Please also include general information about the students you plan to serve.
  4. Statement of Readiness (500 words max) - In order to effectively implement new projects, it is important that your Club and school are prepared for the commitment and able to fully execute the project. You should describe any collaboration that exists between your University and the target school to support science-related activities and generate interest in students. Also describe strategies to attract more students and teachers into the program.
  5. Project Description (2000 words max) should include:

    1. The overall goals of the project.
    2. Strategies and detailed methods to accomplish those goals.
    3. Collaboration statement and who will be involved.
    4. Dissemination plan on how the information generated will be distributed.
    5. Timeline of the project.

  6. Budget- An itemized budget with justification.
  7. Projected Outcomes - Clearly state what the project(s) hopes to achieve
  8. Evaluation Plan - Describe how you will document the project activities and how you plan to measure the extent to which your goals and objectives are met. Also, describe how the project will impact the target school and your club activities.
  9. Timeline.
