The National Institute of Science (NIS) is a nonprofit, tax-exempt national scientific organization.  This organization provides an opportunity for students and faculty members at  Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU's) to exchange information and present scholarly research papers in science and mathematics.  In addition, the NIS provides a forum for participants to interact and network with high school students, community groups, and other scientific organizations and institutions.  Each year, the NIS, along with the Beta Kapp Chi Scientific Honor Society (BKX), holds its joint annual meeting to give students an opportunity to present research papers and network with professionals currently working in science related fields.

The National Institute of Science extends condolences to our sister organization, Beta Kappa Chi Scientific Honor Society on the passing of its president, Dr. Douglas DePriest. Dr. DePriest was a major contributor to the success of the joint annual meetings. More recently, he organized and implemented a highly successful town hall meeting on "Food versus Fuel" at the 66th Joint Annual Meeting of the BKX/NIS. Dr. DePriest was exceptionally hard working and respected by all who came to know him. His presence will be missed; however, his example will continue to inspire us.
